We flew into Fort Lauderdale and stayed in North Beach for two nights and attended an outdoor art fair with more than one hundred booths and a few commercial exhibits like the Best Buy mobile Internet van.
We strolled around Little Havana (Calle Ocho) but chose to eat in a Nicaraguan restaurant the first day. Se habla inglés in all of these places, and the portions are very large. It's very casual, and we saw birthday parties, families, and tourists enjoying dishes like this red snapper, served with delicious plantains and "moros y cristianos" (rice and beans).
South Beach was crowded with traffic, tourists from Latin America, Europe, and the rest of the U.S. The weather was perfect. This area is noted for its art deco buildings. The U.S. post office has been preserved along with the apartment buildings and swank hotels like the Delano where I learned to swim more than 50 years ago.
